WPS is a high-achieving west-suburban district of 2,800 students, with one preschool, three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. QUALIFICATIONS

Citizenship, residency, or work visa required

Professional Certification:

  • A valid driver’s license is required
  • Successful completion of Criminal Records Check (C.O.R.I.), Sexual Offender Record Check (S.O.R.I.), and fingerprint

Experience:

  • Experience in custodial or related work is helpful, but we will train the right candidate

Specialized Skills:

  • Bilingual skills, especially Spanish, are highly desirable but not required
  • Must have effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to work cooperatively/collaboratively as member of a team
  • Must be able to multitask in a fast-paced, supportive environment.
  • Must be organized and able to meet ongoing, time-sensitive deadlines for work production.

Alternative degrees/experience may be substituted for the above

at the discretion of the Superintendent,

if such a substitution brings a strong candidate forward.

Performance Responsibilities

GENERAL MAINTENANCE WORKER

  1. Ability to solve problems and make decisions, maintaining full communication with the Facilities Manager;
  2. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, other school system employees, and the public using the buildings;
  3. Possess a valid driver's license;
  4. Read instructions, write reports, hear voices and machine noise, speak intelligibly, and otherwise communicate in a manner needed to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job;
  5. Lift, move, shovel, sweep, bend, carry, and perform other physical tasks related to the duties and responsibilities of the General Maintenance Worker position;

To support the preventive maintenance program on buildings, grounds, and equipment to ensure the effective operation and safety of all school facilities for use by teachers, students, staff, and visitors.

  1. Communicates daily with the Facilities Manager or designee;
  2. Works with the Facilities Manager to ensure the safe condition and proper operation of the district's buildings and grounds;
  3. Prepares and maintains paperwork to track projects in progress, completed projects, and time and materials;
  4. Properly utilizes district work order systems including opening, updating, and closing maintenance tickets with the proper information to facilitate communication with all stakeholders;
  5. Plans and performs a combination of activities in connection with the maintenance of buildings and grounds as described in the facilities work order system or verbal instruction from the Facilities Manager or designee;
  6. Performs activities related to the preventive maintenance program on buildings, grounds, and equipment;
  7. Conducts visual inspections of facilities to detect any problems related to federal, state, and local codes and regulations defined by OSHA, complies with all aspects of the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) and reports items of concern to the Facilities Manager or designee;
  8. Detects and reports improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials and unusual conditions and takes appropriate measures for corrective action;
  9. In absence of the Facilities Manager, coordinates and assists with the work for upkeep of facilities, school grounds, and snow removal;
  10. Serves as a first responder in buildings and grounds emergencies and is able to work overtime on an as-needed basis;
  11. Assists in setting up and breaking down of events including but not limited to graduations, town meetings, athletic events, or any other district event.

Terms of Employment:

Twelve-month position; 40 hours/week

Compensation with benefits as provided in the Agreement Between the Wayland School Committee and the Public Employees' Local Union #1164.
