Performs themore difficult testing, diagnosis, maintenance, adjustment and revisionwork, requiring a thorough knowledge of the mechanical, electrical andelectronic, pneumatic, or hydraulic control and operating mechanisms ofthe equipment. For example, performs trouble shooting and repair ofcomplex interlocking and supervisory group control panels, keyingcircuits, memory storage circuits, readout and feedback circuits, andassociated mechanical and electrical components throughout theinstallation; locates and corrects malfunctions in scanning, triggeringand other electromechnical and electronic circuits. 2. Observes thevarious components of the system in operation and applies appropriatetesting methods and procedures to insure continued proper functioning.3. Locates the source of and rectifies trouble in involved orquestionable cases, or in emergency situations where expert attention isrequired to locate and correct the defect quickly to avoid or minimizeinterruptions to mail processing activities. 4. Installs or altersequipment and circuits as directed. 5. Reports the circumstancessurrounding equipment failures, and recommends measures for theircorrection. 6. Performs preventive maintenance inspections for thepurpose of discovering incipient mechanical malfunctions and for thepurpose of reviewing the standard of maintenance. Initiates work ordersrequesting corrective actions for below standard conditions; assists inthe estimating of time and materials required. Recommends changes inpreventive maintenance procedures and practices to provide the properlevel of maintenance; assists in the revision of preventive maintenancechecklists and the frequency of performing preventive maintenanceroutes. In instances of serious equipment failures conductsinvestigation to determine the cause of the breakdown and to recommendremedial action to prevent recurrence. 7. Uses necessary hand and powertools, gauging devices, and both electrical and electronic testequipment. 8. Reads schematics, blue prints, wiring diagrams andspecifications in locating and correcting potential or existingmalfunctions and failures. 9. Observes established safety practices andrequirements pertaining to the type of work involved; recommendsadditional safety measures as required. 10. In addition, may oversee thework of lower level maintenance employees, advising and instructing themin proper work methods, and checking for adherence to instructions; ormake in process and final operational checks and tests of work completedby lower level maintenance employees.
