The mechanic of fleet and rides is responsible for the safe maintenance of park rides, machinery and equipment and executing maintenance and repair projects for the zoo rides, vehicles and other associated facilities.   • Performs all daily pre-opening safety inspections on Zoo rides.
  • Performs all daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly ride PMs (including lubrication).
  • Performs all routine maintenance on Zoo vehicles (including lubrication).
  • Complete minor and major repairs with or without the technical assistance/contracted assistance depending on the repair.
  • Maintains an inventory of tools, equipment and supplies.
  • Develops and recommends capital improvements, equipment acquisition, and other improvements.
  • Inspects and monitors facilities and equipment for public safety, maintenance, repair, and/or replacement needs.
  • Prepares and maintains maintenance records and reports.
  • Develops and maintains positive relations and communications with Zoo staff and the general public.
  • Supports other Facilities positions as needed for the successful operation/repair of zoo related issues.
  • As Lead, assists with daily oversight of ride mechanics under the direction of the Director of Facilities and Construction.
  • As Lead, assists with preparation and prioritization of work assignments.
  • As Lead, assists with oversight of department during Department Management absences.
  • As Lead, assists in a responsible role with special events coverage for Maintenance Department.
  • As Lead, keeps all rides operating in a safe and intended manner.
  • When not performing ride maintenance, perform vehicle, cart, small equipment repairs and PMs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
What are we looking for?
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a ride mechanic in a like attraction required. Prefer Journeyman level of experience and education.
  • Five years of experience in progressively responsible general maintenance operations preferred.
  • Should possess practical skill and proficient knowledge in two or more trades, such as: mechanical, electrical, electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, carpentry, welding and small combustion engine repair and maintenance.
  • Must be able to trouble-shoot clearly, calmly and safely in the presence of guests and fellow staff.
  • Must have strong mechanical, electrical and hydraulic experience.
  • Must possess strong safety sensitivity and ability to work with many different types of mechanical devices.
  • Ride maintenance experience and with water and mechanical rides preferred.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required but a comparable amount of training and experience in the specific position requirements may be substituted.
  • Must understand pumps and filtration specific to water rides.
  • PLC/VFD experience preferred.
  • Must have considerable knowledge of mechanical systems and machinery.
  • Must be able to read and understand electrical control diagrams and mechanical ride installation manuals and prints, and trace control circuitry.
  • Must have considerable knowledge of engines, lubrication, bearings, hydraulics, electric, and alignment.
  • Skilled in the use of hand and power tools, and tools pertinent to machinery and general shop duties.
  • Welding and electrical skills preferred.
  • Motivated self-starter- Must be able to take initiative and work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational abilities.
  • Effective communication skillsAbility to develop positive relationships with members of all departments.
  • Ability to complete projects in a reasonable time frame, to the complete satisfaction of supervision.
  • Deal courteously and tactfully with employees, peers, superiors, and the general public.
  • Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
  • Other Requirements:
  • Conducts all activities in alignment with AZA standards and guidelines, all relevant laws and regulations, safety standards, and standards that ensure animal welfare.
  • Must have tools and equipment to perform required duties and tasks as assigned.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Must possess the mental and physical capacities necessary to perform the primary job duties, including climbing and working at heights up to and in excess of 40ft., crawling and working around equipment in limited spaces and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, bend, kneel, squat, stoop and twist. Must possess the physical dexterity to operate hand tools and motor vehicles.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions typical to west central Florida (i.e., heat, rain, or cold).
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment and follow department safety programs.
  • Must have ability to navigate paved as well as rough construction sites.
  • Ability to use radio, telephone, and computer to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be willing and able to work varied and long shifts including holidays and weekends.
  • Must be able to plan for, work, and staff specials events and exhibits as well as be available for unexpected shifts.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, standing, and walking.
  • Must be comfortable being exposed to uncomfortable or distracting sounds or noise levels on sites of projects being managed or coordinated.
