Best applicant must have good communication skills to have the ability to carry out instructions and procedures.
Strong organizational skills are required to keep accurate daily fieldwork logs. This position may involve working in adverse weather conditions and in close proximity to traffic. A valid Virginia drivers license may be required.
Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED, along with one to three years of related experience and/or training in landscape operations, motorized equipment use, or heavy manual labor. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
Additional duties supporting the division may be assigned as needed. This is a full-time role, working 40 hours per week from March through December, with the potential to continue year-round.
SUMMARY
Performs semi-skilled work in the operation of automotive and/or mechanical equipment in connection with the performance of a variety of manual tasks.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following depending on the area of assignment. Other duties may be assigned.
Performs maintenance tasks such as chair and table repairs, rough carpentry, light equipment repair, concrete work, storm drain repair and related tasks
Operates and maintains various types of hand and small power tools
Assists in maintaining inventory and control for all tools, maintenance and equipment
Assists with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.
May require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for fabrication and installation of signs and markings.
May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities, but may require the occasional direction of helpers, seasonal employees, part-time and temporary employees.QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training in the operation of motorized equipment and the performance of heavy manual labor; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of a valid appropriate class A, B, or C commercial driver's license within 6 months of employment.PHYSICAL DEMANDS
