They have at least three years of experience in asphalt, concrete work, or abatement and bring expertise in operating heavy equipment, including backhoes, skip loaders, and front-end loaders. This candidate is physically capable of lifting 75-100 pounds regularly and performing medium to heavy manual labor.

Possessing a valid Class B Drivers License at the time of application is required, with a Class A Drivers License preferred, demonstrating their ability to safely operate large commercial vehicles. Ideally, the candidate also holds a HAZWOPER certification, reinforcing their ability to manage hazardous materials safely and effectively.

Work Schedule:

There is one (1) current full-time (FSLA Non-exempt) vacancy, with a 4/10 schedule: Tuesday to Friday, 6:00 am to 4:30 pm (includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch break). Work hours and/or work schedule may be changed based on the needs of the City.
Job Summary :
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, performs a variety of skilled maintenance duties and oversees activities of a maintenance crew in support of assigned maintenance functions such as concrete or asphalt repair, traffic sign and marking maintenance, street sweeping, weed abatement and debris removal; assists in training and provides work direction to personnel. This classification is not part of the City's Job Series.

(These functions are representative and may not be present in all positions in the class. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind related duties and work assignments.)

  1. Oversees and participates in maintenance activities with a crew of maintenance workers, to assure safe and efficient performance of maintenance assignments.
  2. Assists in training and provides work direction to maintenance personnel as assigned; assigns and reviews work; participates in evaluation processes as requested.
  3. May perform a variety of concrete work including removing concrete, setting forms and mixing, pouring and finishing cement.
  4. Maintains and repairs City streets including patching holes, removing asphalt, grading and preparing areas for paving and laying and finishing new asphalt pavement.
  5. Installs, maintains, repairs and replaces street signs; paints crosswalks, curbs and other traffic markings.
  6. Operates or oversees the operation of a street sweeper to remove debris and maintain City right-of-ways in clean and proper condition.
  7. Oversees and participates in the maintenance of City right-of-ways, bus stops and other assigned areas including weed abatement and debris removal; clean, flush and sweep gutters and catch basins.
  8. Observes and reports road, sign and other maintenance needs as appropriate.
  9. Operates a variety of maintenance equipment and machines such as tractors, jackhammers, street sweepers, paint sprayers, rollers and brushes, and various hand and power tools; checks and maintains tools, equipment and vehicles in clean and proper working condition.
  10. Observes and enforces safety practices and procedures; assures the proper utilization of street cones, barricades and safety flags to divert traffic and maintain safe work areas.
  11. Maintains routine records related to vehicle and/or equipment maintenance and operation, work orders and other maintenance activities.
  12. Performs related duties as required.

A typical way to obtain the requisite qualifications to perform the duties of this class is as follows:

Education and/or Experience :

Graduation from high school or GED and three (3) years of full-time, paid experience in skilled general maintenance including experience in a lead capacity. Experience and/or education in a related field may be substituted on a year for year basis.

Knowledge of :

  • Methods, equipment, tools and materials used in public works maintenance.
  • Principles and practices of training and/or providing work direction.
  • Appropriate safety practices and procedures.
  • Basic maintenance of tools and/or equipment.
  • Applicable sections of the California Vehicle Code.
  • Routine record keeping techniques.

Skill and/or Ability to :

  • Perform semi-skilled to skilled maintenance duties; assist in training and provide work direction and supervision to others.
  • Operate a variety of maintenance tools, equipment and machines safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain tools, equipment and/or vehicles in clean and proper working condition.
  • Lift objects weighing from 75-100 pounds.
  • Observe and enforce safety practices and procedures.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Maintain routine records and reports.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Perform medium to heavy manual labor.

License :

Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license. Some positions will require a class A or B driver's license. Employees in this classification will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

  • Written exam, weighted 60%
  • Oral exam, weighted at 40%
