DEFINITION To serve as a lead worker over a small crew of Maintenance Workers in either streets, parks or islands maintenance activities; to operate a variety of heavy equipment involving construction and maintenance activities on a regular basis; and to perform a variety of skilled tasks in the maintenance and operations of City parks and street facilities. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the advanced journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series including lead supervision over subordinate staff and/or skilled operation of heavy equipment on a regular and ongoing basis. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
- Receives direction from Department Supervisory and management personnel.
- Exercises functional and technical supervision over assigned maintenance personnel.
- Lead a field crew in area of assignment including street or park maintenance activities; provide technical guidance to less experienced workers.
- Assist in scheduling, assigning and evaluating maintenance services.
- Review job requirements; provide for equipment and supplies; assign job tasks; oversee work on an assigned field job.
- Participate in the requisition and purchase of materials and supplies.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Perform heavy manual labor including heavy lifting, stooping, bending and twisting.
- Participate in the street maintenance duties including asphalt and concrete repair, sign maintenance, and street and curb painting.
- Operate heavy construction and maintenance equipment such as loaders, backhoes, and street sweepers for a variety of construction and maintenance operations for the most difficult and complex activities.
- Inspect and identify asphalt in need of repair; perform inspections of street signs requiring repair or replacement.
- Layout, fabricate, repair and install regulatory, guide, warning and construction signs; straighten and reset street signs and parking meter poles.
- Perform street sweeping activities in the maintenance of City streets.
- Maintain and prune City trees; maintain storm drains, pipes, and catch basins.
- Perform emergency street, sewer, storm drain or other public service maintenance work as required.
- Participate in park maintenance duties including maintaining and planting trees, shrubs and lawns; participate in the maintenance and installation of irrigation systems; maintain athletic fields and related facilities.
- Operate mowers, tractors, trencher and vehicles; operate a variety of equipment including a boom truck, chain saws, stump grinder, chipper, mowers, trimmers and related equipment; utilize a variety of hand and power tools in park landscape maintenance and facilities maintenance work; assist in routine maintenance of such equipment.
- Apply herbicides, fungicides and pesticides safely; maintain records of fertilizers and chemicals used.
- Perform the trimming of trees by climbing or utilizing an aerial bucket; grind and remove tree stumps.
- Perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks involving the maintenance, construction and repair of park and recreational facilities.
- May assist in other sections of the Department as necessary.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Techniques for estimating job requirements in terms of staffing, time, materials and equipment.
- Operating characteristics of construction equipment, including backhoes, loaders, rollers, boom trucks, grinders, chippers, mowers, trimmers and related equipment.
- Methods, techniques, tools and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, traffic signs/markings and municipal parks.
- Hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions.
- Traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in truck and heavy equipment operations.
- Purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.
- Standards relating to the installation, location and required maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings.
- Techniques and methods of irrigation system installation and maintenance.
- Procedures and standards involved in landscaping.
- Properties of herbicides and insecticides, construction materials, concrete, asphalt, hot patch, cold patch, oils, paints and a variety of other materials used in maintenance work.
- Standard and complex procedures and methods used in street maintenance and parks maintenance.
- Direct the work of a crew of maintenance workers.
- Keep records and prepare reports.
- Perform skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned.
- Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
- Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints.
- Work safely and adhere to principles of safety when working near traffic or in other hazardous environments.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communications with others.
- Demonstrate the ability to:

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience :
Three years of experience performing either park or street maintenance and construction duties. Training : Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. License or Certificate
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, walking or sitting for long periods of time; and operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
