Seasonal Maintenance Worker - Transportation

The City has an excellent opportunity for motivated and energetic candidates to learn new skills and get experience in the utilities and maintenance fields. We will be filling a number of temporary positions in the Natural Resources, Streets, and Water divisions from this recruitment. These are full-time roles working Monday through Friday. The transportation crew plays a key role in maintaining and upgrading our streets infrastructure, improving the citys winter weather response, and implementing sustainable street maintenance and repair practices.
Examples of Duties

(Tasks listed are intended to be descriptive and not restrictive. An employee in this classification may perform any of the tasks listed; however, these examples do not include all the tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.)

  1. Uses a variety of hand and power-operated tools and equipment such as shovels, picks, hand and small riding mowers, power hacksaws, drills, jackhammers, welders, compressors, portable concrete saws, and weed whackers.
  2. Maintains streets, water, and stormwater infrastructure within the right-of-way.
  3. Responds to public inquiries and service requests in a courteous and timely manner; evaluates citizen complaints by on-site inspection. Provides information within the scope of knowledge or refers to other City staff. May follow through with written reports.
  4. Assists with the mapping of all utility infrastructure, including street signs, pavement markings, and streets.
  5. Assists with street repairs, asphalt raking, barricade repair, and sign maintenance.
  6. Conducts survey of streets, noting problem areas, potholes, cracks, and sign damage; performs street maintenance and repair, including hot paving, cold patching, and crack sealing.
  7. Prepares and maintains electronic logs and records of daily work activity including time, materials, and equipment utilized through asset management software.
  8. Maintains right of way.
  9. Maintains positive public relations with customers and is responsive to customer needs.
  10. Develops safe work habits and contributes to the safety of self, co-workers, and the general public.
    Performs other related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Basic construction and repair methods and procedures.
  • Safety practices and procedures applicable to assigned tools and work area.
  • Power tools used in maintenance operations.

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Work as a team member.
  • Provide internal and external customer service.

Required Education, Training and Experience

(Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties of this position. Prior work experience and educational requirements listed are typical ways of obtaining the required qualifications. Other equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.)

  • High school degree or GED; AND
  • Six months of manual labor, maintenance, construction, or landscaping experience; OR
  • Some college coursework in the field of interest.
Licensing/Special Requirements:
  • Valid driver license and acceptable driving history.
