The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is seeking a self-starting and energetic Facility Maintenance Technician (Aquatics) to assist in operations of Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center, which is the County's first membership-based recreation center and will be a regional destination for competitive swimming and recreational opportunities. The Facility Mechanic is tasked with oversight of a comprehensive indoor maintenance program to ensure the clean and efficient operations of the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center. This position will build and manage relationships with vendors performing maintenance in the facility, track and order equipment as necessary, and liaise on-site with custodial staff.

The Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center has something for everyone. For those looking to fuel their competitive side the facility includes a 50-meter FINA compliant pool with 1-meter, 3-meter, and 5-meter diving, a whirlpool, and two bulkheads to create more opportunities in the pool. On the other side of the facility, the family pool facility includes a splash pad for tots, a water slide, 4-25-yard lap lanes areas for swim classes and lessons, in-water volleyball & basketball, and a lazy river. Specific duties include:

  • Acting as a liaison to maintenance contractors performing preventative or corrective maintenance in the facility including pool systems, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and security systems;
  • Managing facility access and key FOBs, including working directly with contracted security company to control and manage access;
  • Performing maintenance on pool systems including regenerative media pool filters, Ultra-Violet or UV bulbs, and chemical feeding equipment;
  • Managing the Building Automation System (BAS), including performing skilled preventative maintenance to standard systems, equipment, and identifying preventative maintenance cycles based on operator use and manufacturer's recommendations;
  • Troubleshooting inoperable or malfunctioning standard systems and equipment;
  • Diagnosing, testing, and making plumbing repairs including clearing drain traps, snaking drain lines, repairing pipes and plumbing fixtures;
  • Coordinating and conducting seasonal maintenance inspections;
  • Performing administrative duties including inventory management and work order management in Cartegraph work order system;
  • Performing weekly whirlpool draining and cleaning to ensure optimal efficiency and cleanliness; and
  • Performing ordering of facility needs including pool chemicals, pool supplies, and other needs.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Minimum:

  • High School/Equivalent; and
  • Some experience in commercial and/or industrial facilities or a similarly complex environment in more than one of the following areas: aquatics facility maintenance, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or general mechanical repairs.

Substitution: Additional education may substitute for some experience.

Desirables: Preference may be given to those with one or more of the following:

  • 5+ years' experience managing maintenance in an aquatic environment;
  • 5+ years' experience managing a Building Automation System (BAS);
  • 5+ years' experience managing maintenance in a commercial environment; and
  • Knowledge of Cartegraph, or similar work order and inventory management systems.

Possession of one or more of the following Licenses/Certifications preferred:

  • Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO);
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO);
  • Local Journeyman or Master Electrician License in Virginia and/or Maryland; and
  • HVAC-R (VA Licensure)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess or obtain within 90 days of hire the following: Aquatic Facility Operator, Certified Pool Operator or similar credential, and/or CFC Refrigeration Certification.
  • A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates selected for employment. Applicants may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
  • Work is generally performed indoors, with occasional work outdoors.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Work Hours: Hours will vary between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with flexibility based on the operational needs of the facility. This position also requires participation in an on-call rotation and the ability to respond to emergencies, which may occur outside of standard working hours.
