Operates a variety of construction equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance and repair activities; performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of streets, alleys and storm sewer systems. Examples of Duties The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Operates trucks, including dump trucks, of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials and supplies. Operates construction or power equipment, such as backhoe, air compressor, jackhammer, asphalt roller, sand spreader and trencher. Maintains daily work records. Operates other small equipment and tools to maintain street and utility systems. Repairs and replaces concrete sidewalks, curb and gutter, streets and alleys. Performs digging ditches, repairing potholes, hoisting material, tools, equipment and any related work. Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment. Performs installation and maintenance of traffic control devices, street name signs, other signs and street marking. Performs on-call duties to respond to requests for services after normal work hours and weekends. Works overtime when necessary, available and responds to after-hour emergencies and call outs when requested. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards. Assists other departments as required.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of equipment operating principles; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations; working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in utility maintenance work. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral or written instruction; ability to read and write in English; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to observe proper safety precautions; ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public; ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions; ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions; ability to work from construction specifications or blueprints. Knowledge and experience in setting forms and finishing concrete for flatwork, driveways and curbs.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification
Graduation from high school or GED preferred;
Four (4) years experience involving the use of medium and heavy equipment, one of which must have been related to utility or street systems;
Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities;
Valid State Operator's;
CDL Certification or ability to obtain one;
Water and/or Wastewater Certification desirable.

Motorized vehicles and equipment, including back-hoe, dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, tapping machine, flusher, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sand spreaders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone and ditch witch.
