The Village of Buffalo Grove (population 42,482) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Full-Time Maintenance Worker within the Department of Public Works (Utility Section). As an APWA-accredited agency, Buffalo Grove Public Works is committed to delivering high-quality, innovative services that leverage technology to enhance service efficiency. Ideal candidates should have experience in public works or a similar field, as well as strong proficiency in using technology. This includes desktop computers, mobile devices, and the ability to effectively track and report work completed.The Maintenance Worker will perform a range of manual and semi-skilled tasks, including but not limited to snow plowing, utility excavation and repair (water, sanitary and storm), meter installation and repair, distribution system maintenance, pumpstation maintenance, water sampling, collection system maintenance, and utility locating. Additional duties will be assigned as necessary.
This position involves considerable public interaction, often in challenging situations, such as investigating customer complaints and explaining policies and services. The worker will also be responsible for frontline winter maintenance tasks, including snow and ice control, as well as underground utility repairs.
Key duties include operating excavating equipment, dump trucks, flat-bed trucks, and other vehicles to transport personnel, materials, and supplies. The worker will also operate construction-type equipment and trucks equipped with snowplows and salt spreaders.
The position requires the ability to work in all weather conditions and use both power and hand tools. The worker must be available to work beyond the regular schedule, including weekends and holidays, often on short notice. Utility Section employees are on call year-round but see most of their overtime accrued from August to April averaging about 250 overtime hours per year.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of tools, materials, and standard equipment used in the assigned area of work.
  • Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of small and medium-duty trucks and equipment.
  • Understanding of the safety hazards and precautions associated with the work.
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Capacity to perform the essential duties of the position effectively.
  • Adherence to safety policies and procedures.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with some experience in a related field or a combination of relevant training and experience.
  • Valid Class "B" Illinois Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake and Tanker endorsements, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Compliance with Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing requirements.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Class A Illinois Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Air Brake and Tanker endorsements.
  • Illinois Class C or D water License.
  • Illinois Collections System License.
  • APWA Illinois Public Service Institute or Illinois Road Scholar Graduate.

The salary for this position is $64,507.04 (pay plan step 266 ), based on 2,080 annual hours at $31.01/hour. Overtime is an expectation of this position and requires the ability to report to work within one hour of contact. Overtime is paid at a compensatory rate of 1.5 unless worked on an observed holiday at which point the rate is 2.0. Full time employees are allowed to convert overtime hours worked into Comp time equivalent to the OT rate earned and bank to use those hours in accordance with Policy and Procedure at a later time. Full time employees are assigned to a call back schedule for the duration of the winter season, as part of snow & ice control or utility repair crews.

Full time employees are enrolled into the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF). Full time employees may select between several offered benefits including medical insurance plans, including dental and vision programs. Dental, Vision, and basic life insurance are 100% paid by the Village.

Full time employees are provided a full suite of PTO including Vacation, Holiday, Sick, Comp, etc. (some forms of PTO are earned/accrued and may be prorated during your first partial year of service).

Full time employees are provided with a cell phone through the department. Full time employees also receive an annual work wear stipend and are provided with all necessary PPE upon hiring.
