Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work, operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of Town water, sewer, street, and storm drainage facilities and systems. Examples of Duties The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Maintain all aspects of the water distribution system to comply with state, federal and local requirements. Assists in the training of the Public Works Maintenance Worker II position in performing the duties of maintenance, construction and repair of water, sewer, street, and storm drainage facilities. Inspects and/or repairs meters, streets, drainage systems and sewer system at frequent intervals to insure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly. Maintains water meter change out program. Flush and paint fire hydrants. Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water; evaluates situation; explains findings to supervisor and assists Customer Service Department. Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use. Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel and sand. Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment. Read water meters with and without electronic meter reading device. Operates light and medium sized construction and power equipment, such as jetter/inductor truck or backhoe/loader. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards. Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, pipe and main repair, laying and backfilling. Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans and flushes water mains, pipe, gate, valves and fittings on repair of mains and services and installation of services. Maintains daily work records. Repair plumbing facilities in Town buildings. Performs on-call duties to respond to requests for services after normal work hours and weekends. Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the water, sewer and street department. Works overtime when necessary, available and responds to after-hour emergencies and call outs when requested. Performs other duties as required. Assists other departments as required.

Considerable knowledge of equipment operating principles; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations; working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in utility maintenance work. Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment. Ability to read and write in English. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to work from construction specifications and blueprints. Knowledge of state and federal requirements to maintain a safe work environment when working in rights-of-way required.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent;
Four (4) years of experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair;
Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities;
Valid State Driver's license;
CDL certification or ability to obtain;
Water and/or Wastewater Certification desirable.

Motorized vehicles and equipment, including back-hoe, dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, flusher, tapping machine, meter reading devices, truck, roller, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch and meter reading equipment.
