Youll help test water quality, clean locker rooms and pool decks, support seasonal operations, and make sure facilities are ready for swimmers and visitors. Its steady, hands-on work that directly supports public health and community enjoyment.

Job ResponsibilitiesLicenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
- Minimum of one year of experience as a pool operator for large commercial/municipal pools or completion of a nationally recognized Certified Pool Operator/Aquatic Facility Operator (CPO/AFO) course. (Or a combination of education, training, and experience that provides an equivalent background.)
- Basic swimming ability, as evidenced by successfully passing a ten-minute swim/float test every three years.
- First Aid and CPR certification (may be obtained after hire).
- Current Washington State driver's license.
You will be most successful in this position if you have:
- Fundamental understanding of pool operation, maintenance, and water chemistry for large aquatic systems including swimming pools, hot tubs, spray parks, fountains, wading pools, and ponds.
- Proficiency in water sanitation methods and techniques, disinfection, water quality maintenance, and record-keeping of testing results.
- Applied knowledge of basic hydraulic principles, chemical testing methods, testing equipment, and chemical handling.
- Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of chlorinating equipment, automated chemical feed systems, electrical panels, timing controls, heating controls, pumps, and motors.
- Effective communication skills to coordinate maintenance activities, convey operational needs, concerns, and procedures to both maintenance and recreation staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively prioritize and schedule maintenance tasks, aligning them with programming needs.
- Experience ordering, storing, and maintaining an inventory of the materials, chemicals, and supplies necessary for the maintenance tasks at Aquatic Facilities.
- Detailed knowledge of Health Department and other agencies standards as they relate to water quality and Aquatic Facilities.
- Janitorial or custodial experience, demonstrating proficiency in using a variety of cleaning equipment, supplies, and chemicals to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in building spaces.
- Operate and maintain large, high-traffic public Aquatic Facilities, including swimming pools, hot tubs, spray parks, fountains, wading pools, and ponds.
- Perform water tests to verify compliance and balance of water, adjust as needed.
- Service chemical feed equipment, maintain filtration systems, complete logs, and preserve records.
- Follow guidelines for the safe use and storage of the hazardous materials required to sanitize and balance the water.
- Adhere to facility standards ensuring compliance with all department guidelines and governing jurisdictions regulations.
- Employ a variety of cleaning equipment, supplies, and chemicals to ensure the facility's cleanliness and hygiene, including areas such as the pool natatorium, locker rooms, lobbies, spray pads, fountains, mechanical rooms, and other facility spaces.
- Available for assignment to aquatic seasonal positions, substitution coverage, or reassignment to care for any of the city's numerous aquatic facilities as demands change seasonally and over time.
- Prepare facilities to accommodate diverse programming needs, including special event setup, take-down, and cleanup.
- Track and appropriately store an inventory of the various chemicals, paper products, soaps, and cleaning supplies necessary for the upkeep of an Aquatic Facility.
- Place orders and accept deliveries necessary to maintain acceptable inventory levels.
- Performs custodial activities to clean facilities, such as pool deck, locker room, restrooms, and lobby.
- Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned .
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires a minimum of one year experience in the operation and maintenance of municipal or commercial swimming pool physical facilities, or satisfactory completion of the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department Pool Operation Training program (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

- Ability to learn and retain knowledge of each of the Seattle Parks and Recreation Aquatic Facilities, enabling work in substitute positions as demands change seasonally and over time.
Work Environment/Physical Demands/Other:
- Shifts begin as early as 04:00 am.
- May be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, early morning, and/or holidays.
- Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
- Required to work outdoors in all types of inclement weather.
- Occasionally required to work at heights above ground level.
- Required to routinely lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds, with occasional lifting or moving of items exceeding 50 pounds.
- Requires handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances.
- May work in confined spaces.
- Dependent on business needs, candidates may be required to obtain a respirator clearance fit test.
Current Washington State driver's license. A current, "FULL" driving abstract from the Department of Licensing submitted upon offer of employment. Candidates with a driving history that does not meet our current safety standards will be disqualified from consideration. Current City of Seattle Employees in a driving position may be required to submit an updated abstract.
