Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class works as a seasonal member of a maintenance crew led by the Athletic Fields Technician. This employee performs manual labor tasks preparing and maintaining athletic fields in the city for various sports and other activities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Parks and Athletic Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Work is reviewed for ability to follow directions, complete assigned tasks in a safe and timely manner, and clean-up of work area. Positions in this classification are not exempt from the overtime pay requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Illustrative Examples of Work
  • Operate mowing equipment, weed trimmer, blower, paint machine, hand tools, and other equipment associated with assigned work;
  • Drive/operate light duty trucks with and without a trailer, utility vehicles, tractors with and without attachments, mowers, string trimmers, hand tools, rakes, shovels and other minor tools and equipment associated with assigned work;
  • Prepare ballfields for play; drag, measure, and line ballfields to correct specifications; use paint machine to paint lines;
  • Perform grounds keeping activities by removing debris, seeding, and watering;
  • Perform general building maintenance including trash removal, general restroom cleaning and stocking of paper supplies;
  • Assist with athletic grounds maintenance including sprigging and seeding, etc.;
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspection on equipment;
  • Assist with maintenance of park facilities when necessary;
  • Ensure the use of safety at all times.

  • Other duties may include assisting in special event set-up and breakdown, cleaning up after storms, clearing snow and ice, removing leaves, spreading mulch and other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Work in this position is heavy work (exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects). Must be able to lift 50-70 pounds. Sometimes this lifting is done overhead. Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. The employee must have the visual acuity to operate trucks and other equipment. The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions that may include extreme cold, heat, noise, vibration, proximity to moving mechanical parts, atmospheric conditions and oils. Worker may come in contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids.

Expected months of employment include but not guaranteed or limited to March October.

  • 1-2 years of experience in the field is recommended but not required;
  • Should maintain a valid NC Drivers License at all times.
