Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Facilities Manager, performs entry level maintenance work and projects in connection with the repair, construction and upkeep of the school buildings and equipment; and performs work as required. This position is an entry level position. Incumbents are required to have a general working knowledge of different trade areas.

Under general supervision, perform general maintenance work in connection with the repair, construction and upkeep of the school buildings and equipment; and performs work as required.

Classification

Classified, non-exempt. Work year: 240 days

Description

This position requires the incumbent to perform unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled craft or maintenance work in the maintenance, repair, construction, and upkeep of school buildings, facilities, and miscellaneous equipment, and to do other related work.

Essential Functions and Examples of Job Duties

Perform semi- or un-skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work in one or more of the basic trade areas, such as carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, and heating and refrigeration

Performs and/or assists in maintenance, installation and repair to buildings and equipment in connection with all areas of maintenance, grounds and custodial including the construction, mechanical and electrical trades

Makes routine and emergency repairs and adjustments to buildings, furniture, equipment and facilities such as, but not limited to, roofs, locks, plumbing, walls, flooring, glass, cement, asphalt, and doors

Restoration and repair of various surfaces, and finishes; clean and maintain rain gutters and drains

When not engaged in maintenance work, assists as required in a variety of grounds and/or custodial work throughout the school

Uses power and hand tools to do tasks

Lift stacks ad moves heavy furniture, equipment and materials

Operates light to medium weight equipment to pick up or deliver equipment, furniture and supplies

Performs routine safety checks

May work as part of a crew or independently on routine tasks

Perform other related duties as assigned

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Abilities, and Other Requirements

Education and experience:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade

A minimum of two (2) years' experience in the performance of building maintenance

Any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities

Knowledge of:

Basic knowledge of construction, plumbing, electricity, air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and general equipment repair

Operation of tools employed in building maintenance work

Basic English usage, writing and math

General safety procedures and practices relating to the building trades, hazmat and safety regulations

The ability to:

Perform maintenance duties, ability to troubleshoot and perform repairs with a minimum of supervision/assistance

Maintain work schedules, deadlines and records in performing repairs, maintain work pace appropriate to given workload

Use hand and power tools and power equipment

Drive and operate a variety of vehicles and equipment used in maintenance trades legally and defensively

Life heavy items

Speak, read and write English at a level required for satisfactory job performance

Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance

Maintain a pleasant appearance and demeanor

The work environment:

Outdoor environment, subject to adverse weather conditions, regular exposure to heat, cold, dust, odors, chemicals, pollen and dirt

Subject to frequent heavy lifting, carrying, up to 50 pounds, pushing and/or pulling of objects, up to 100 pounds

Subject to work around plants, shrubs, and ground covers, exposure to pollen, chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, gasoline and motor oil

Working with machinery having moving parts, subject to noise from equipment and tools

May be required to wear a respirator or other safety equipment in execution of duties

May involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, lifts and ramps

Other Requirements:

High degree of mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn new skills, routines and equipment

Good physical condition as determined by pre- and current employment inquires and health reports

Physical strength and stamina to do strenuous work, such as but not limited to digging, climbing ladders, walking over uneven surfaces

Standing for extended periods of time, bending, grasping, stooping and kneeling, reaching above shoulders, seeing to perform work

Physical dexterity in the limbs and finger digits to operate equipment and to perform strenuous manual labor

Fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice

Current, clear T.B. test results

Requirements / Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade

A minimum of one (1) year experience in the performance of building maintenance or as a helper in a building construction trade, involving specialized knowledge of at least one maintenance trade.

Any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
