Head Mechanic Description
TITLE: HEAD MECHANIC / SUPERVISOR
LOCATION: TRANSPORTATION GARAGE DAY SHIFT
JOB GOAL: To maintain an efficient, well maintained and mechanically safe school bus fleet.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To assist the Director of Transportation with the supervision and coordination of activities related to repairing, adjusting, and servicing commercial school buses, nutritional service trucks, library mobile unit, and miscellaneous school district vehicles. Assist with analysis of defective equipment, to determine the nature of the problem, and to assist with the supervision of the necessary repairs to be performed. Have the ability to perform the duties of the Head mechanic as necessary.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma Required 1. S. E. Licensed College Desirable
Mechanical knowledge and at least one year experience in management of vehicle repair, maintenance and fleet quality control. Skills appropriate for the service of gasoline, diesel, and compressed natural gas engines. High level of effective human relations skills, computation skills, a working knowledge of computers to maintain shop data base record keeping. Demonstrate an ability to organize tasks, records, and people in an efficient productive manner. Possess a commercial driver's license with school bus endorsement, and air brakes. Be familiar with DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT necessary for electrical and hydraulic maintenance. Dress appropriate to the lead position, to maintain integrity in association with vendors. Maintain preventative maintenance commitments to assure safe public school transportation services.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible to the Director of Transportation
- Assist with inspections and or repairs completed by shop personnel to verify quality of work completed
- Assist with maintaining the correct inventory necessary to effectively and efficiently repair vehicles in a timely manner
- Assist and or supervise with vehicle repair history record for all vehicles repaired in the USD 500 school transportation shop and or outside vendors on our vehicles
- Assist with reviews of repair order requests, and the scheduling of those repairs
- Assist with the supervision of all work done by shop personnel i.e., automatic transmission troubleshooting and repair, brake repairs and replacements / FMVSS 121 trouble shooting, diesel / gasoline / compressed natural gas engine repairs and trouble shooting, electrical system repairs and trouble shooting
- Assist with the inspection and maintenance of all other components associated with the highest standards in maintaining a safe fleet
- Assist with the issuing and approving of purchase orders for payment to vendors
- Assist with the supervision of all preventative maintenance and fleet quality control
- Assist with the tracking of all vendors recalls and warranty work to be performed by outside vendors
- Assist with weekly fuel ordering Maintain the care of building and grounds respond to weather conditions

Understanding of systems required to run an effective transportation operation (mechanical, software, training)

Must be able to secure a CDL License with a school bus and air brake endorsement
Must have a valid and clear driving record and maintain a high standard Perform other related work as required
COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION: Maintain an open communication with school personnel and vendors to enhance cooperative action and collaboration in order to meet the educational needs of students. Utilize existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.
REASONING ABILITY: Must have the ability to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; computer operations and management information systems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work is medium to heavy. Employee will routinely handle loads weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally handle loads weighing up to 100 pounds or more. Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling and crouching required for repairs and installation of equipment. Standing and walking is required most of the work day. Specific reaching is required for handling tools and equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color discrimination, close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. Must have a field of vision required for reading and supervising repairs of electrical and mechanical systems, able to work inside or outside in any type of weather, and be subject to loud machinery noise.
