The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Maintenance Supervisor to join the Hyak Maintenance section located at Snoqualmie Pass, WA. This position plays a vital role in keeping Washingtons highways safe and operational year-round, especially during critical winter operations. Under the direction of the Maintenance Superintendent, the Maintenance Supervisor plans, budgets, schedules, and supervises the work of one or more highway maintenance crews responsible for roadway, roadside, infrastructure, and right-of-way maintenance. A successful candidate will bring strong leadership skills, a commitment to safety, and experience managing maintenance operations to ensure the efficient and safe movement of people, goods, and services on Washingtons state highways.

What to Expect
This position performs work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors, often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. A typical schedule is Monday through Thursday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. Occasional call-out/call-back for overtime required.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Supervisor will:

  • Supervise highway maintenance workers in the daily performance of all maintenance and operations tasks within the Hyak Maintenance section.
  • Identify needed maintenance work activities and determine work priorities for maintenance crews.
  • Manage consumable inventory, including purchasing, record keeping, and budgeting.
  • Coordinate equipment and labor with South Central Region Area 1 sections Ellensburg, Bullfrog and Hyak.
  • Conduct monthly crew safety and training meetings.
  • Respond to emergency callouts within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Be responsible for employee development and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Perform a variety of highway maintenance activities as needed, including operating 54,000 GVW dump trucks and other heavy equipment.
  • Supervise winter operations, perform snow and ice control, and respond to emergency situations.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required :

  • Highway and Roadway Maintenance: Demonstrate hands-on experience in roadway maintenance, including pavement repair, drainage systems, snow and ice control, and roadside upkeep. Ability to apply practical knowledge of maintenance standards and procedures in the performance of highway preservation tasks.
  • Leadership and Supervision : Provide guidance and direction to crews, promoting accountability and teamwork. Experience delegating tasks effectively and supporting others in achieving quality results under tight deadlines or stressful conditions.
  • Equipment Operation: Proficient in operating and maintaining a range of heavy equipment, including dump trucks (GVW 26,00054,000), plows, sanders, loaders, and other tools essential to highway maintenance. Adapt equipment use to changing conditions, including during adverse weather and emergency events.
  • Traffic Control and Flagging: Skilled in setting up and maintaining safe and effective traffic control in accordance with MUTCD or M54-44 standards. Perform flagging, signs, and cone/barrel placement with attention to site-specific safety and operational requirements.
  • Emergency Response: Respond promptly and effectively to emergency incidents, coordinating with internal staff, law enforcement, fire/medical services, and other agencies to ensure public and crew safety. Make sound decisions under pressure, communicating clearly in high-stress or rapidly changing situations.
  • Communication and Customer Service: Communicate clearly and professionally in both written and verbal formats. Demonstrate a courteous and solution-oriented approach when interacting with the public, coworkers, and partner agencies.
  • Safety Practices: Diligently follows all safety policies, procedures, and best practices while performing work in potentially hazardous environments. Identify risks and take proactive steps to ensure a safe worksite for self and others.
  • Work Ethic and Dependability: Demonstrate strong time management skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Prioritize workload, adapt to changing assignments, and maintain consistent attendance and punctuality.

In addition to the above, the following are also required:

  • A CDL Class A with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions.
  • A valid Traffic Control/Flagging Card with experience performing traffic control per M54-44 or MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or the ability to obtain Flagger Certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • First Aid Certified within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to and work in all weather conditions and traverse rough, steep terrain.
  • Ability to work alternate shifts and respond to emergency situations 24/7 as needed, including nights, weekends, holidays, standby, overtime, and callout.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience operating a dump truck with plow, sander, and deicer/anti-icing system, & a front-end loader.
  • Knowledge of state highways, roadsides, and right of ways of the surrounding area.
  • Understanding and experience dealing with Public/Private Owned Fleet & Rental Equipment.
