About the Position: This position performs maintenance and repair of lock and dam equipment and floating plant machinery. Responsibilities include equipment repair, abrasive blasting, painting, deckhand duties, and operating heavy machinery. The work ensures safe and reliable operation of waterway infrastructure through skilled trade practices and teamwork in field site environments. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Marine Machinery Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I can repair equipment, perform abrasive blasting, paint, perform deckhand duties and operate heavy equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Efforts: Work requires continual physical effort in the handling of equipment and tools, while working from scaffolds, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling; reaching, climbing, working overhead, crawling and crouching in strained and/or awkward positions often for prolonged periods while blasting, painting, or otherwise working on structures sometimes at heights up to 55 feet. In addition to work from an aerial tower "cage", employee is required to possess agility in order to work from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, or other stagings, and is required to lift, carry, and set up equipment or materials weighing up to 75 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Handling of blasting hose requires control of 110 psi pressure.
  • Working Conditions: Performs work primarily outdoors, but also inside. Outdoor work is subject to temperature and other weather extremes typical of the local climate. Inside work is performed inside miter gate enclosures, valve gate recesses, tainter gate recesses, tainter or roller dam gates, or other enclosed or semi-enclosed locations which subject the worker to fumes, dust or other unpleasant environment. Work is performed from scaffolding, permanently installed walkways and platforms or ladders above ground level, and, in many instances, above water thus subjecting employee to injuries associated with falls and water. Other exposure to heat, dust, rust, scale, abrasives, paint fumes is present with the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, burns, broken bones and cuts being present. Some discomfort from protective clothing, gloves, or other equipment is normal.
