Job Purpose:
The General Maintenance Technician supports Gonzaga University's mission by maintaining, repairing, and enhancing the safety, functionality, and appearance of campus facilities. This role ensures a high-quality physical environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Working across various settings, the technician plays a vital part in preserving the beauty and operational excellence of our campus while being part of a collaborative, mission-driven community.
Essential Functions:
90% - Maintenance & Repairs
General Maintenance -
Perform minor plumbing, electrical, painting, and carpentry repairs in commercial, residential, and institutional buildings
Address common maintenance tasks such as unclogging drains, resetting breakers, repairing drywall, fixing doors, caulking, and painting surfaces
Maintain roofs, gutters, windows, doors, and related hardware
Repair and maintain commercial kitchen equipment, including dishwashers and disposals
Support and coordinate with other trades and facilities staff on projects and remodel
Equipment & Machinery Operation -
Operate university service vehicles and safely transport materials and tools
Use hand and power tools; maintain equipment and shop inventory
Operate powered machinery including scissor lifts, boom lifts, forklifts, and high-reach equipment
Documentation & Work Orders -
Schedule, track, and complete work orders in a timely manner using campus systems
Document repairs and maintenance activities
provide cost estimates for minor projects
General & Emergency Response -
Provide after-hours and weekend coverage as needed;
respond to emergency maintenance calls
Apply knowledge across trades to independently troubleshoot and resolve urgent facility issues
Source and procure materials through university warehouses and approved vendors - (Essential)
Additional Duties as Assigned by the Department
Educational Requirement:
High School Diploma or GED
Years of Related Experience Requirement:
5 years
In lieu of the educational qualifications, candidates may qualify with equivalent professional experience at a ratio of one year of experience for each year of required education.
Certifications and/or Licensures:
Valid driver's license; proven driving ability with good driving record.
Skills & Abilities:
Strong Attention to detail and accuracy.
Minimum of 5 years of general building maintenance experience, including basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting
Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment
Basic computer literacy, including ability to use work order and email systems
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, work at heights, and perform tasks in varying weather conditions
Availability for on-call, weekend, and after-hours emergency response
Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of a technical/vocational training program in building maintenance or a related field
3+ years of experience in institutional, commercial, or campus facilities maintenance
Familiarity with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems)
Certifications or specialized training in one or more trades (e.g., HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry)
Demonstrated experience working in a university or similar large campus setting
Knowledge of applicable safety and building codes
Physical & On-Campus Requirements:
In-Office Presence - Ability to work on-site in typical office setting and participate in in-person meetings with colleagues: 5 days/week
Standing/Sitting - Ability to remain in a stationary position for a prolonged period: Daily (>75% of time)
Walking - Ability to move about on foot to accomplish tasks: Daily (>75% of time)
Lifting/Carrying - Ability to move or transport objects up to a specified weight (e.g., 50 pounds): Daily (>75% of time)
Attention to Detail - Ability to focus on detailed tasks for extended periods: Daily (>75% of time)
Problem-Solving - Ability to identify and resolve issues effectively: Daily (>75% of time)
The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position: $22.81 - $25.50
