General Definition of Work:

This is the intermediate level mechanic position. With minimal supervision, the employee performs a wide variety of general and preventive maintenance and repair work. Employee shall possess a competent knowledge in at least one building trade and working knowledge of general facility maintenance and repairs; does related work as required. Shift work may be required. May be responsible for supervising less skilled workers. This position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies.

Essential Functions:
  • Assists in the maintenance and minor repair of HVAC, electrical, plumbing and carpentry systems and equipment;
  • Repairs windows and doors, builds/installs shelving and partitions;
  • Installs ceiling, floor tiles, bulletin boards, and weather stripping;
  • Repairs roofs, gutters and downspouts;
  • Replaces locks, door closures and screens;
  • Performs painting assignments including finishing sheetrock, repairing walls, applying primer and finish paint per paint manufacturer specifications;
  • Performs skilled work in plumbing and mechanical repairs and installation;
  • Performs basic preventive maintenance equipment;
  • Maintains appropriate service and repair, and keeps records of work and makes reports;
  • May be assigned crew leader for specific projects;
  • Performs snow/ice removal duties during the winter;
  • Inspects and tests equipment and tools for safety infractions;
  • Makes recommendations for conservation of energy;
  • Adheres to safety standards in accordance to Department's safety manual;
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in general building maintenance work with competent knowledge of methods, tools and equipment of one of the building trades; thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions associated with work; ability to use test meters, read building prints, schematic drawings, and research parts and materials for projects; ability to communicate orally and in writing; must be knowledgeable with regard to the County school buildings’ systems including water, sewer, electrical, HVAC, sprinkler and alarm systems; knowledge of basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word, use of email, and Outlook Calendar.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and four (4) years of experience in Building Services, and satisfactory completion of the 3rd year of CATEC, or approved Apprenticeship Program, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Drug screening and tuberculin test is required. Must possess a valid drivers' license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts:

Work involves frequent walking, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Frequently works from ladders, in cramped spaces, in dusty conditions, and in inclement weather; regular contact with office personnel, other staff members, vendors, individuals from other departments and the general public. Work environment routinely exposes employee to potential major injuries, occasional exposure to hazardous substances. Work requires dexterity in using of both hands, hand-eye coordination and processing basic mechanical sequence of events.
