POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Parks Supervisor, the position will perform general parks, trails and open space maintenance and repair. Position will maintain assigned city parks and trails and assist in the maintenance of other areas as assigned. This position will provide exemplary customer service to the employees and citizens of the City of Fruita.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs a wide variety of duties involving all areas of Parks by performing the following duties. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Parks, trails, and open space maintenance, landscaping, and tree planting, including mowing, trimming, fertilizing, pruning, irrigating, weeding, landscape maintenance, restroom, and trash daily.
  • Turf maintenance for optimal athletic performance including fertilization, aerating, topdressing, and discovery/control of weeds, insects, and diseases.
  • Dirt playing field management includes infield skin, baselines, home plate, pitcher’s mound, bullpens, and warning track.
  • Maintain grounds equipment (mowers, trimmers, etc.)
  • Perform playground inspections in city parks.
  • Irrigation system repair and maintenance. must attend regular irrigation classes.
  • Operation and transport of riding mower equipment
  • Operation of hand and power tools
  • Operation of the following equipment: skid steer, backhoe, brush hog, and chainsaw.
  • Support of city and other community special events
  • Snow removal on city sidewalks and trails
  • Develop and maintain safe working practices, PPE etc.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Position assists with the supervision of part-time parks maintenance workers and community service workers.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Training, and Experiences

High School Diploma or GED, fit for duty, and two (2) years of experience in parks and facilities maintenance. Arborist experience pr4eferred. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Special Licenses, Registrations, or Certificates:

Must have a satisfactory driving record. Forklift certification preferred. Flagger certification preferred. Master Gardner preferred. CDL License preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of parks, trails, and open space management
  • Knowledge of and skilled in the use of riding mowers, blowers, and trimmers.
  • Ability to trailer, load and unload equipment.
  • Ability to oversee volunteers and assigned staff.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to maintain strong customer service skills in handling and dealing with a large portion of the general public.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to represent the City in a professional manner.
  • Be willing to work non-traditional hours; including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to climb, balance, kneel, crawl, crouch, reach, grasp, feel, and perform repetitive motions. This position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, visual acuity, and ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to extremely noisy. Work environment is both inside and outside with the majority of performed outside including during inclement weather conditions. Position will be required to work on-call hours.
