DEFINITION
Under general supervision, the Maintenance Worker II performs a variety of manual, manipulative, semi-skilled, and skilled tasks in the construction, operation, and maintenance of public services facilities; drives trucks and operates equipment; performs heavy physical labor; acts as lead worker of a small crew as assigned; and performs other duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a journey level position classification in the Maintenance Worker series. Employees may work as part of a crew under supervision, may be assigned to individual duties, or may be assigned to act as a lead worker.This class is distinguished from the class of Maintenance Worker I in which incumbents are assigned journey level tasks requiring some experience in general public works maintenance andconstruction work. Additionally, incumbents assigned to this class generally are given assignments involving more independent responsibility for the work performed.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
General supervision is provided by a division manager or supervisor.Supervision may also be provided by a section leader of a maintenance crew by other maintenance workers.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead small work crew of 2 or 3.
Examples of Important and Essential Functions
Maintenance Division, Street Maintenance Section Functions
Constructs, maintains, and repairs fences, pavement, curbs, gutters, and channels; performs hand grading; sets forms, mixes, pours, and finishes concrete; performs paving; paints traffic lines and installs traffic markings; institutes appropriate safety control procedures for street work; safely operates equipment such as rollers, tractors, loaders, jack hammers, trucks, compressors, concrete saws, and trenchers, and motorized street sweepers; makes, assembles, and installs signs; safely use hand and power tools, such as shovels, hoes, saws, grinders, and airless paint sprayers.
Lead Functions
Assigns work and monitors progress toward successful job completion; trains crew members in the safe use of maintenance and construction equipment and in safety procedures; provides input on performance evaluations of crew members; maintains logs and write reports; orders and obtains job materials and monitors operation of equipment and materials on the job site; and may regularly be assigned to a particular program activity.
Job Related and Essential Qualifications
Demonstrated Knowledge of:
Safe operation and maintenance of hand and power tools such as shovels, hoes, drills, air compressors, jack hammers, grinders, concrete saws, and pumps; operation and maintenance of heavy motorized equipment such as trucks, tractors, and fork lifts; materials and practices used in construction, maintenance and operation of all public services facilities; appropriate safety precautions and first aid techniques; one or more of the basic trades; basic mathematics; personal computer operation and data input preferred. Some positions may require working knowledge of safe operation of motorized street sweepers.
Demonstrated Skills to:
Safely operate large trucks and heavy motorized equipment; understand and follow verbal and written directions and work from diagrams, sketches, maps, and drawings; safely use hand and power tools; perform a variety of manual and manipulative tasks; perform heavy physical labor in the accomplishment of tasks; perform minor mechanical maintenance and repair; prepare neat and accurate records and basic reports; make quick decisions in an emergency; establish and maintain an organized work area; lead a small crew as assigned; train others in the performance of work duties and safety procedures; take appropriate safety precautions in the performance of job duties; utilize personal computers to perform word processing and specialized functions; communicate and relate effectively to those contacted in the course of work; and exemplify an enthusiastic, resourceful, and effective customer service attitude.
Ability to:
Learn and apply the City's policies, practices, and protocols; work independently to evaluate situations, identify problems, and arrive at logical decisions; take the initiative to keep work progressing to completion within prescribed time limits; and establish and maintain effective, tactful, and courteous relations with the general public, contractors, and City staff.
Experience, Education, and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience, education, and training that would provide the best qualified candidates. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience: Three years experience in construction, street maintenance, and painting, or related work including semi-skilled and skilled assignments and operation of trucks, heavy equipment, and power tools or one year public sector experience at a level equivalent to a Maintenance Worker I with the City of Livermore.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Training: Any recent training such as academic courses and certification programs which are relevant to this job classification.
License: Possession and continued maintenance of valid California Class C and Class A driver's licenses with the appropriate endorsements and a satisfactory driving record as determined by the City.
Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) Requirement: Incumbents in this job classification may be called upon, at any time, to perform safety sensitive functions, and therefore, may be subject to the Federal Highway Administration D.O.T. regulations and the City's policy concerning drug and alcohol testing as a continuing condition of employment with the City of Livermore.
Certification: None required
Other Requirements: Willingness and ability to work scheduled and emergency overtime and be available on call as required; work special events as needed; wear a uniform and appropriate safety attire and equipment, which may include a self-contained breathing apparatus, as required by the City; work outdoors under adverse conditions such as at night, in confined and awkward spaces, in heavy traffic, in heat, cold, and rain; and attend workshops and classes as required during work and non-work hours.
Special Requirements: Essential duties require the mental and/or physical ability to read fine print on labels, manuals, maps, and diagrams and with no color deficiencies to work with color coded wires; interpret maps and diagrams; converse on the telephone, 2-way radio, and in person, often over the noise of machinery and traffic; detect noises in machinery and hear running water; drive vehicles; safely operate and use equipment, hand and power tools, and a computer; crawl, bend, stoop, reach, and climb; and strength to safely lift and maneuver jackhammers, hand and power tools, supplies, and other equipment weighing up to 90 pounds many times a day.
