The City of Hanford is looking to fill two (2) Parks Maintenance Worker vacancies in the Public Works Department - Parks Division. This position is to perform a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled work in the maintenance of parks, green spaces under City of Hanford stewardship and to provide maintenance support in the field on special projects.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Parks Maintenance Worker I - This is the entry-level class in the Parks Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents in this class may have little or no related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. Incumbents work under supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned areas of responsibility are learned. The Parks Maintenance Worker I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. The Level I class will not be able to operate equipment that requires a CDL Class B License.

Parks Maintenance Worker II - This is the journey-level class in the Parks Maintenance Worker series and is distinguished from the I level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual, or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.

Parks Maintenance Worker II class is distinguished from the Senior Maintenance Worker in that the latter is responsible for providing regular technical and functional supervision of less experienced staff, and for performing the most complex work of the unit.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Parks Maintenance Worker I

Receives supervision from an assigned supervisor; may receive technical and functional supervision from a Senior Maintenance Worker.

Parks Maintenance Worker II

Receives general supervision from an assigned supervisor; may receive technical and functional supervision from a Senior Maintenance Worker.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Respond to complaints and answer questions from the public.
Perform routine maintenance work in the care of tools and supplies.

Train less experienced staff in proper work methods and procedures.

Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.

Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect.

Being a team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and open communication.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Irrigate, mow, weed, trim, and fertilize lawns and landscaped areas; plant, water, and maintain various vegetation such as bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs, and lawns; trim and prune bushes, trees, and shrubs; stake trees, as necessary.

Check and program irrigation controllers check for alarms and repair and replace as necessary; request support from other staff, as needed, for more complex repairs or more involved repairs.

Clear debris or leaves by raking or using power blowers to clear walkways, paths, playing fields, courts, and other parks/recreational facilities.

Perform basic construction, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting tasks; clean and re-stock bathroom facilities; load brush trimmings, rubbish, paper, and trash onto trucks for appropriate disposal.

Apply herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides in a safe and effective manner; perform a variety of cement and asphalt work; renovate and maintain stream bed areas including maintenance of trails and installation of vegetation and erosion control devices.

Inspect and repair playground equipment, picnic tables, barbecues, and other related parks /recreational equipment.

Additional Information

The application screening will involve a competitive evaluation of relevant education, training, and work experience, followed by a written examination and/or an interview before an Oral Board to identify the most qualified candidates. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee applicants an interview, and the screening committee's decision is final . Candidates deemed eligible for appointment to the position will be placed on the Citys Certified Eligibility List. Applicants will receive written notification regarding the results of all phases of the recruitment process leading up to the establishment of the Eligibility List, if applicable.
